Zdravko Lorković

Zdravko Lorković (born January 3, 1900 in Zagreb ; † November 11, 1998 ibid) was a Yugoslav entomologist specializing in butterflies.

education and profession

Lorković studied biology at the University of Zagreb . He completed his studies in 1924 with his diploma thesis "Experimental researches on the effects of the color and odor on insects". During his studies he became an assistant at an institute at the university. In 1928 he received his doctorate for his work “The analysis of the species concept and variability based on research on some butterflies”. Shortly thereafter, he became a professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Zagreb (until 1951), then at the Faculty of Medicine, where he stayed until his retirement in 1970.

At the same time he taught zoology and entomology at the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry and Genetics at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Zagreb. His scientific work was in the areas of taxonomy, ecology and genetics.

From 1965 he was a member of the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts (from 1991 Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts ). Lorković was co-editor of the journal "Acta entomologica Jugoslavica" (today "Entomologica Croatica"). He was a member of numerous national and international scientific organizations such as the European Lepidopterological Society, the Lepidopterists' Society of the USA and the Croatian Biological Society.

Lorković's scientific works are numerous. “Entomologica Croatica” lists 88 articles in which Lorković was author or co-author. His first publication dates from 1923 ("Prilog poznavanju ruda u Jugoslaviji"), his last appeared on September 11, 1998, two months before his death, in the series "Stapfia" on the first median vein in the species of the butterfly family Pieridae .

His brother Mladen Lorkovic (1909–1945) was first foreign minister in the independent state of Croatia , then interior minister.
