Zebedee
Zebedee is a biblical person mentioned in the New Testament .
etymology
The personal name Zebedee ( ancient Greek Ζεβεδαῖος Zebedaíos ) is the Greek form of the Hebrew name זְבַדְיָה zəvadjāh . This is a genitive connection, consisting of the basic word "gift" and the theophoric element יָה jāh (a short form of YHWH ). The name therefore means "gift of YHWH".
Biblical narration
All that is known of Zebedee from the Gospels is that he was a fisherman and had two sons named James and John , both of whom became disciples of Jesus . Nevertheless, Zebedee achieved a certain fame because his two sons, who had quite common names, were often referred to as the "Zebedee sons" (this was common in the parlance at the time) or "Zebedaids" to distinguish them from other namesake.
The calling of the sons of Zebedee is described, for example, in Mt 4,21 EU . Later, because of their impetuous nature, they were also given the nickname Sons of Thunder , cf. Lk 9.54 EU .
It is unclear whether the wife of Zebedee ( Mt 27.56 EU ), counted among the women under the cross in the Gospel of Matthew , is identical to the Salome named in Mk 15.40 EU . The Christian tradition sees this as the same person.
