The Max Zechbauer Tobacco GmbH & Co. KG is a Munich-based traditional house for cigars and tobacco products. After it was founded in 1830, Zechbauer was one of the first traders in Europe to import cigars from Cuba (Havana). This makes the company, which initially traded in chewing tobacco and snuff , the oldest specialty cigar shop in Germany. Max Zechbauer Tabakwaren is in the 7th generation of the family.

The company's own brand of cigars was introduced as early as the 19th century, and in 1886 Max Zechbauer was appointed supplier to the royal Bavarian court . 1973 Zechbauer became Davidoff's first exclusive partner outside of Switzerland. In 1998, Zechbauer opened an online cigar shop as one of the first tobacco traders in Germany, which also sells accessories such as humidors, cigar cutters, ashtrays, cases and specialist books.

history

In 1795 Anna and Franz Zechbauer came to Munich from South Tyrol and opened a grocer's shop in the suburb of Au . This was later expanded to include a snuff production facility and a small vinegar factory. Her son Josef enlarged the shop, improved the range and added more types of tobacco to the range. The shop later moved into the newly built arcades of the court garden of the royal residence and developed there into a grocery store .

During this time the company was founded by Max Josef Zechbauer in 1830, which is now in the 7th generation of the family. The import and export of cigars from all over the world and the production of Zechbauer cigars became more and more a specialty of the company. Zechbauer was one of the first in Europe to start importing Havana cigars and selling them in its Havana catalogs. Soon it was good manners to buy cigars and other tobacco products as well as smoking accessories in Germany's first specialty cigar shop. The clientele reached far beyond the borders of Munich. The Russian tsarist court, the Vatican and aristocratic circles in England, Spain, Italy and Austria were regular customers. In 1886 the Zechbauer company was appointed supplier to the royal Bavarian court. Another 14 European purveyor titles followed in the 19th century.

Zechbauer house in 2016

In 1911, the company moved into the so-called Zechbauer House opposite the Bavarian State Opera . The historic shop has been modernized and a walk-in humidor has been added, but otherwise retained almost unchanged in the old style. 1973 Zechbauer became the first supplier of Davidoff cigars outside of Switzerland.

Since August 2018, Zechbauer has been operating another exclusive cigar shop in the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski in Munich, combined with a cigar lounge, which is available to hotel guests and Zechbauer customers.

The business has been run by cigar expert Mirko Pettene since 2000.
