The reinforced concrete structure, erected between 1916 and 1917 according to plans by Robert Oerley , was a production facility for optical devices from the Carl Zeiss works. The structure erected on a hilltop in the west of Vienna was equipped with an observatory dome that was used for test purposes.

The building stood empty from 1918 to 1929 and was only sold to Radiowerk Schrack AG from Vienna- Meidling . The Philips Radioröhren Ges. MbH, Vienna , a subsidiary of the Dutch Philips group, initially took over the Horny radio works in 1936 , renamed it “Wiener Radiowerke AG” (WIRAG) and in 1939 also bought the Schrack works on Abbegasse.

First WIRAG tube receivers and Philips electron tubes were manufactured there. From 1940 precision mechanical instruments for ship and aircraft construction as well as u. a. manufactured for the Luftwaffe Lorenz - landing system receiver . After the war ended in 1945 , radio tube production began again.

The first Philips tape recorder was produced here in 1947 and the first video recorder in 1964 . Radio recorders followed in the 1970s .

The plant that existed here was relocated between 1985 and 1987, and the area has been used by the armed forces since then. Until 2008, this property was the location of the home radio stations (radio connection to foreign missions) of the Austrian Armed Forces. The antennas and radio stations installed there were dismantled and reinstalled as part of a restructuring in St. Johann im Pongau and Villach. In addition, the area served the Technical Museum during the renovation from 1992 to 1999 as an external storage facility for various exhibits, some of which were only picked up years after the renovation. Remnants of it, such as the segment of the Vienna underground that once stood in front of the museum, are still on the site. In 2005 it was decided to sell the area, but this has not yet been completed. The building is currently used as a training workshop for vehicle and tank technology for the Army Logistics School.
