Transcript (own spelling: transcript ) is a scientific specialist publisher based in the East Westphalian city ​​of Bielefeld in North Rhine-Westphalia . The focus of the publishing house lies in the media , social and cultural studies , in history , philosophy and museology as well as in culture and museum management. The managing directors are Roswitha Gost and Karin Werner. The publishing house was founded in 1997, the first title to be published was Werner's dissertation. Like many other academic publishers , Transcript is primarily a grant publisher . This means that scientists usually pay to publish their research results and do not receive any fees . Transcript has been a partner in Uni-Taschenbücher (UTB) since 2020 .

Publishing program

The publishing program includes recent debates on the concept of culture and topics such as identity , new media, urbanity , migration and religion. Theoretical perspectives are u. a. delivered by post-structuralism , systems theory , gender , science as well as cultural and media studies .

According to its own information, the publisher brings out around 400 new publications per year and has a backlist of around 4,500 titles. With the contemporary diagnostic essays in the X-Texts series , the publisher addresses an audience that goes beyond the academic clientele ; he became known in the social sciences with the textbook series Insights .

Open Access

Some of the publisher's publications (around 650 of 4,500) are open access ; the publisher says it cooperates with various initiatives and programs to promote it. For an open access publication in its own program, Transcript currently charges at least 5,100 euros (plus VAT); for a standard publication of around 300 pages, at least 6,000 euros (plus VAT) is estimated.

Well-known publications

The Society of Anger was published in 2019 . Right-wing populism in the global age by Cornelia Koppetsch at Transcript, after the manuscript had previously been rejected by Suhrkamp- Verlag. The book was received positively and became a bestseller . In the summer of 2019, the publisher was informed that the first edition of the book contained plagiarized passages from the book Die Republik der Angst by Frank Biess . On the recommendation of the ombudsman for science of the German Research Foundation , the passages for the second edition of the book (also in 2019) were partially corrected, but the intervention was not made transparent. Numerous other plagiarism allegations were made against the author at the end of 2019 . Transcript then withdrew the title, which was available in the second edition, at the end of 2019 and waived a third edition. The TU Darmstadt announced that it would initiate disciplinary proceedings against Koppetsch for scientific misconduct.

Journal of Cultural Studies

Since 2007, transcript Verlag has published two editions of the Zeitschrift für Kulturwissenschaften (ZfK) every year . The ZfK offers a “platform for interdisciplinary discussion and controversy”, which is particularly aimed at younger scientists who are developing current interdisciplinary approaches. It was founded in 2007 by Thomas Hauschild and Lutz Musner and published by them until 2012. Karin Harrasser and Elisabeth Timm have been the full editors since 2013 .
