history

Local history

It was first mentioned in a document in 1325 as "Gewiller". The village developed on both sides of the Eichertsbach . The course of the river formed a territorial border for many years. The left-hand part of the village was subject to the Duchy of Pfalz-Zweibrücken until the end of the 18th century , the right-hand part to the Electorate of Trier .

Gehweiler came in 1920 as a result of the separation of the district of St. Wendel and the mayor of Oberkirchen on the basis of the peace treaty of Versailles to the mayor of Oberkirchen-Nord (later mayor or office of Oberkirchen) in the remainder of the district of Sankt Wendel-Baumholder . On April 1, 1939, the Oberkirchen office was merged with the Burglichtenberg office to form the new Freisen office in Berschweiler (in the Birkenfeld district created in 1937 ). In the summer of 1944 the administrative headquarters were moved to Freisen; on July 20, 1946, Gehweiler came to the Namborn office (in the Saarland).

As part of the regional and administrative reform in Saarland , the previously independent municipality of Gehweiler was assigned to the municipality of Namborn on January 1, 1974.
