The formation of the bog can be traced back to the leaching of Zechstein salts stored in the subsoil , which probably started in the tertiary period around 25 million years ago; this led to a sinkhole and the formation of today's subrosion sink . The bog was formed by rotting plants and a lack of water drainage. The Moorauge is a pond about 100 m² in size and 30 cm deep.

The association for natural history in East Hesse (VNO) has owned the area since 1973. In 1969, the association counted a total of 124 species of flowering plants in this moorland.
