The Zemplínska šírava (literally "Sempliner width") is a 1961 to 1965 erbauter, very popular reservoir in eastern Slovakia . It is located about 60 km east of Košice , near the district town of Michalovce in the Dolný Zemplín tourist region . In terms of volume (334 million m³), it is the largest reservoir in Slovakia .
The Laborec river was dammed into a lake from 1961 to 1965 by building a low dam , 6 to 8 (in some places up to 12) meters deep and with a maximum area of 33.5 km² 11 km long and up to 3.5 km wide and which is intended to serve as flood protection. The water is used for industrial and agricultural purposes.
The two forested ranges of hills, which protect the large bathing lake, rise from a fertile plain and are called Hrádok (163 m) and Biela hora (159 m). The arch of the Vihorlat Mountains shields the lake from the north wind and allows the warmest climate in Slovakia with an average sunshine duration of 2200 hours per year. The annual mean temperature is 9–10 ° C, the daily mean in July and August up to 30 ° C. The Zemplínska šírava is one of the few bathing lakes in eastern Slovakia, offers numerous opportunities for water sports and has become a center of local tourism .
In the east of the Zemplínska šírava there is a bird sanctuary with an ornithological station. There is also a smaller lake, the Vinianske jazero, near the Zemplínska šírava near the town of Vinné. Since it was commissioned in 1966, numerous recreational areas have emerged on the banks. On the north bank Hôrka (the center), Medvedia hora (special location on a peninsula), Kamenec , Paľkov . On the west bank, Biela hora is especially worthy of mention.
