Zenithoptera is a genus ofdragonflies inthe subfamily Palpopleurinae and wasfirst describedby Edmond de Sélys-Longchamps in 1869 . The distribution area extends mainly over Nicaragua and Paraguay to the northeast of Argentina .
features
Zenithoptera species are relatively small and grow to be 21 to 29 millimeters in size. Her thorax is dark brown, her abdomen black. In some species there are yellow stripes on the side of the thorax. The wings are black and shimmer bluish to purple. At the nodus and at the wing tips they also have a white stripe perpendicular to the wing.
Systematics
The genus was first established in 1869 by Sélys based on the Libellula americana . In 1889 Kirby also established the genus Potamothemis with the Libellula fasciata as a generotype. When Borror recognized the synonymity of the two animals in 1945, he also synonymous the species. The following species belong to the genus Zenithoptera :
