Central African Trench

The African rift valley is divided into a western and an eastern arm. The western part (left in the picture) is called the Central African Trench .

The Central African Rift Valley is part of the Great Rift Valley . From the south, the forks East African Rift (East African Rift System Engl., Abbreviated EARS) north of Lake Malawi into a western and an eastern arm in. The western arm includes parts of Uganda and Tanzania as well as Rwanda , Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo . The latter three are counted in geographical subdivisions to Central Africa . Therefore, one speaks in German of the Central African Graben.

The northern part of the western rift arm is also called the Albert Rift (with Lake Albert in the north), which continues in the Kivu Rift (with Lake Kiwu ) and the Tanganyika Rift (with Lake Tanganyika ). It is accompanied by some of the highest African mountains and mountains, Virunga Volcanoes , Mitumba Mountains and Ruwenzori Mountains , and includes some of the deepest lakes in the world, including Lake Tanganyika, which is up to 1,470 meters deep.
