The Central American colors are the colors blue , white and blue, which are used in the flags of the Central American republics of Guatemala , Honduras , El Salvador , Nicaragua and Costa Rica and which are based on the Argentine flag .

history

After the naval operations under the French-born, Argentine commanders Louis Michel Aury and Hippolyte Bouchard , the Argentine flag became the model for the blue-white-blue flag of the first independent state in Central America, which was founded in 1818 and is located on the island of Providencia off the east coast of present-day Nicaragua was located. This state existed until around 1821, before Greater Colombia took control of these islands. A little later (1823) this flag was again the model for the flag of the Central American Confederation ( Provincias Unidas del Centro de América ), a confederation of the Central American states of Guatemala , Honduras , El Salvador , Nicaragua and Costa Rica , which existed from 1823 to 1838 ( see also flag of Guatemala , flag of Honduras , flag of El Salvador , flag of Nicaragua , flag of Costa Rica ).

From 1842 to 1847 there was an unstable union between Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua.

From 1851 to 1853 there was a connection between El Salvador, Nicaragua and Honduras and from 1895 to 1898 a federal republic with Salvador, Nicaragua and Honduras.

The conviction that they are separate members of an association that belongs together has survived to the present. The symbolic expression of this hope are the colors blue-white-blue that recur in the national flags of all Central American Free States. They go back to the blue-white-blue horizontally striped federal flag of the United Provinces of Central America . An exception is the flag of Panama , as the country was not part of Central America, but a split off Colombia.

The flags of Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua can only be distinguished by looking closely. Apart from national symbols, they are identical to the Central American tricolor. Costa Rica adds a red stripe to the blue-white-blue colors as a distinguishing mark.
