Centralny Port Komunikacyjny (CPK) is a government project in Poland ; Template: future / in 5 yearsA Polish central airport is to be built by 2027 . This major airport is to replace or relieve the previous Warsaw airport . The Polish President Andrzej Duda signed the law in question in June 2018.

location

The airport is to be built near the A2 motorway around 40 kilometers southwest of the capital towards Łódź in the Grodziski powiat . A rail link is also possible. The government expects costs of 9.6 billion euros.

From 2019, a little-used airport in Radom will be thoroughly rebuilt and enlarged at the same time . The airport is about 100 kilometers south of Warsaw with no motorway connection. The purpose of this construction project remains unclear.

history

The current Warsaw airport has a passenger number of 15 million. It has quadrupled its number of passengers since 2000 and is operating close to its capacity limits. Due to the surrounding buildings, it cannot be expanded. There is another airport, the much smaller former military airport Warsaw-Modlin with 2.9 million passengers in the northwest of the city, which has so far been used by low-cost airlines .

On June 17, 2018, a local referendum was held in the relevant municipality of Baranów . The two questions were as follows:

  1. Are you in favor of Baranów as the location for the central airport?
  2. Are you in favor of the compensation proposed by the government?

With a voter turnout of around 47 percent, 17.2% of the valid voters answered yes to the first and 6.1% to the second question. Accordingly, 82.8% and 93.9% decided against it. Although the vote is valid because the quorum of 30% has been exceeded , it is not binding on the government.
