The Central Kashmiri vole ( Alticola montosa ) is a rodent in the genus of mountain voles that occurs in Asia.

features

The head body length of the species is 10.2 to 12.6 cm and the tail length is 4.1 to 6.5 cm. No information is available on weight. The color of the long and dense fur is dark brown on top, while the underside is covered by gray fur. Clear differences to other members of the generic species exist mainly in the structure of the enamel of the rear molar teeth.

Distribution and way of life

The distribution area of ​​the species is in the politically disputed region of Kashmir . A small western population is also documented in the border area between Afghanistan and Pakistan . The Central Kashmiri vole can be found in the mountains at altitudes between 2,600 and 4,300 meters above sea level. The habitat is mountain forests with caves, cliffs and stones that offer protection.

The diet consists mainly of leaves and stems of herbs, especially of the genera Artemisia , bird knotweed and thyme .

Hazard and protection

The population of the central Kashmiri vole is partially threatened by fighting in the region. In addition, deforestation has a negative effect. The species is listed as endangered ( Vulnerable) by the IUCN .
