The Central Mosque of Madrid ( Spanish Mezquita Central de Madrid ), also known as Abu-Bakr Mosque ( Mezquita Abu-Bakr , named after the successor of Muhammad ), is located on Anastasio Herrero Street in the Cuatro Caminos district in the Tetuán district of Madrid .
history
When it opened in 1988, it was the first mosque since the city was taken by the troops of Alfonso VI. of León and Castile and the associated expulsion of the Moors in 1085.
Designed by the architect Juan Mora Urbano , the building is the seat of the Unión de Comunidades Islámicas de España (Union of Islamic Communities in Spain) and the Islamic Community of Madrid. The mosque has a cooperation agreement with the Autonomous Community of Madrid and with the Spanish State through the Islamic Commission of Spain .

The building is spread over four floors and, in addition to the prayer room and offices, also has a daycare center, a school, a library, an auditorium and a shop. The mosque thus takes on religious, non-profit, educational, cultural and social functions and has signed an agreement with the al-Azhar University in Cairo, which is known in the Islamic world, on the training and provision of imams .
