The State Central Administration for Statistics (SZS) was the central state organ for official statistics in the GDR .

On October 19, 1945, the German Central Administration for Statistics in the Soviet Occupation Zone (later called Central Statistical Office for short) was formed in accordance with SMAD Order 105 . The parts of the former Reich Statistical Office in Berlin formed the basis of this central administration .

In September 1949 the Central Statistical Office was assigned to the Ministry of Planning , which later became the State Planning Commission . In 1950 the statistics of the GDR were centralized. The state statistical offices became subordinate authorities of the Central Statistical Office; with the abolition of the Länder they became district offices of the Central Statistical Office in August 1952 . In September 1952, the Central Statistical Office was renamed the State Central Administration for Statistics (SZS). In 1956 the SZS was subordinated to the Council of Ministers as an independent office . Since January 1, 1970, the seat of the SZS was in the house of statistics in the Hans-Beimler-Strasse 70-72 in Berlin.

After the fall of the Wall , the State Central Administration for Statistics was renamed the Statistical Office of the GDR in March 1990 . After the reestablishment of the states, the office was dissolved on October 3, 1990 and continued as the joint statistical office of the states of Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia . Later his tasks were transferred to the newly created statistical offices of the new federal states. The central functions for the new federal states were continued as the Federal Statistical Office / Berlin-Alexanderplatz branch . The SZS documents are archived in the Federal Archives .

In September 1990 the office had a total of 3,326 employees. The central office for primary documentation was subordinate to the SZS.
