Gerhard Bondi

Gerhard Bondi (born March 9, 1911 in Karbitz , Austria-Hungary , † December 3, 1966 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German economist.

Life

Gerhard Bondi's father was a commercial clerk. He attended high school in Teplitz and in Bergreichenstein . After graduating from high school in 1928, he studied at the University of World Trade in Vienna and at the Berlin School of Commerce . In Vienna he became a member and functionary of the Red Student Group of the SPÖ and joined the KPÖ in 1929 . In Berlin he worked for the Soviet trade agency from 1931. In 1933/34 he studied at the Nuremberg Commercial College and then went back to Czechoslovakia . He studied law at the German University in Prague and received his doctorate in December 1938. After the smashing of Czechoslovakia in March 1939, he fled to Great Britain, where he worked in the Free Austrian Movement in refugee aid and got by with odd jobs.

In 1946 he returned to Germany and joined the SED . In the Soviet occupation zone he became an employee for planning and statistics at the German Central Administration for Energy and Fuel Industry and was President of the Central Administration for Statistics in the GDR from 1949 to 1951 . In 1951 he became a lecturer at the German Administration Academy of the GDR.

In 1953 he became a lecturer and in 1957 professor for economic history at the University of Halle . He completed his habilitation in 1955 with a thesis on the history of German foreign trade from 1815 to 1870. In 1957 he became director of the Institute for Economic History, and from 1959 to 1963 he was rector of the university. Between 1960 and 1964 he was a member of the SED district leadership in Halle.

Bondi became a member of the Academy of Sciences and was awarded the Silver Patriotic Order of Merit in 1959 .
