The ZTG was founded by a resolution of the Academic Senate of the TU Berlin on December 7, 1994 as an interdisciplinary research focus (FSP). On December 1, 1995, the ZTG began its work for the first time. After the ZTG had only worked on a trial basis, it became an integral part of the TU in September 2003.

When it was founded, the Center for Technology and Society had six members. In 2012, around 50 employees worked in the changing projects in the management of projects or as research assistants. Her disciplinary background ranges from engineering in various fields to psychology, sociology, design, political science, history and German studies to architecture, urban and landscape planning, cultural studies and computer science.

The Kieperthaus was the headquarters of the ZTG until March 2003, after which it moved to rooms on the main campus of the TU Berlin. In April 2011 the institute moved into new office space in the former IHK building at Hardenbergstrasse 16-18.
