Center on the mountain

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The center on the mountain is a test tunnel of the Montan University Leoben on the Styrian Erzberg . The mining research facility is a unique model facility for tunnel construction in Europe .

Location and facility

The center on the mountain is near Eisenerz , in the area of the terrace mining on the Erzberg.

The underground facility comprises two parallel road tunnels , two parallel rail tunnels , and a test gallery . The tunnels are around 400 meters long and connected with each other with fire and safety tunnels, the tunnel network is around four kilometers long.

The plant was built in 2016–2020. The construction cost was 30 million euros, from state, federal and university funds. It is operated together with the Erzberg mining company VA Erzberg. The opening ceremony was due to take place on May 28, 2020, but was canceled due to Corona.

business

The facility enables research and development in the construction and operation of underground facilities on a 1: 1 scale. For example, aerodynamic issues relating to ventilation, safety in underground construction and operation, and material developments can be tested . Other aspects can also be examined, such as underground storage of energy or research into the influences and effects of climate change on underground mining.

Similarly, the system serves the education and training under real underground conditions Montanists as for operating and maintenance personnel and civil defense - emergency personnel . The first major international exercise took place in spring 2019. A training center for anti-terrorism operations in subway stations is also planned.

At the same time, the old Münichtal settlement will be a quarter for practitioners and emergency services with around a thousand beds. At the same time, the old Eisenerz hospital is being converted into a modern practice hospital in order to be able to train the entire rescue chain .

It is managed by the Montanist Robert Galler , at the time head of the Subsurface Engineering department at the Montan University.
