The Center for Environmentally Conscious Building e. V. (ZUB) was a research institute affiliated with the University of Kassel.

The institute, founded in 1999, as an independent institution, together with the Fraunhofer Institute project group Kassel, the departments of building physics, technical building equipment and experimental building at the University of Kassel, formed a research focus for environmentally conscious building.

The core competence of the institute was the energetic optimization in the building sector and applied research in the field of building physics . In addition, the ZUB dealt with research, planning, advanced training and the development of planning instruments.

The legal form of the institute was a non-profit association, which gave institutions, companies and private individuals the opportunity to join the association as supporting members and thus support and actively shape the ZUB.

In 2007 around 100 scientists, students and employees worked at the institute. The ZUB was mainly financed from publicly funded research projects and research contracts from industry and, on behalf of the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning (BBR), played an important role in the further development of the DIN V 18599 standard and its expansion for future versions of the Energy Saving Ordinance .

Gerd Hauser has been the institute's chairman since the institute was founded . Since 2008, Anton Maas has been chairman of the board and Gerd Hauser has remained on the board.

In 2011 the research area of the ZUB was integrated into the University of Kassel and the further education area into the private subsidiary of the University of Kassel, UNIKIMS, in which the university organizes its scientific further education offers. Since then UNIKIMS has continued to use the name ZUB for advanced training in environmentally conscious building. The association was dissolved.

research

Project participations included:

  • Research contract from the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning (BBR): DIN V 18599 for residential buildings
  • Research contract of the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning: Extended usage conditions for non-residential buildings in accordance with DIN V 18599 (boundary conditions for new usage profiles)
  • MASEA material database for old building materials in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics , Holzkirchen
  • Research assignment of the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU): Green roof measurement and correction proposal for U-value
  • Research assignment of the DBU: building made of straw bales
  • Scientific evaluation of the competitions PROM 2008 and PROM 2009
  • Research assignment of the BBR: Quality assurance - Adhesives - Airtight layers Project overview: Construction quality ( Memento from August 8, 2007 in the Internet Archive )
  • Research project DGfH - Influence of short-wave radiation on thermal comfort
  • Research assignment of the BBR: Germany map for old building materials and component structures

Planning tools

ZUB was the publisher of the EPASS-HELENA software, which can be used to perform calculations in accordance with the Energy Saving Ordinance , DIN 4701, DIN 4108, DIN V 18599 , DIN EN ISO 6946 and DIN EN 13370. The ZUB was also the publisher of the ARGOS software, which can be used to calculate two-dimensional thermal bridges in buildings. The software is published today by zub-systems GmbH, which was founded out of this at the time of the association.

further education

Since 2001, the ZUB has been one of the central contact points for the training course in energy consultants in the building materials trade (EfiB), which is primarily aimed at building material dealers . The aim of the course is to increase advisory skills in retail in the field of energy efficiency and building physics in a four-week course. In the years 2001 to 2018, over 3,000 technical advisors were trained at the ZUB, some of whom are authorized to issue energy certificates for existing residential buildings in accordance with §21 and §29 of the Energy Saving Ordinance .

The other training opportunities are more academic and are primarily aimed at architects, planners and construction engineers with topics such as building physics, thermography, blower door measurements, energy saving regulations, energy efficiency, building law and the construction industry.

Institute building

With a heating requirement of only 25 kWh / m²a, the building is a model for energy-efficient construction. The heat consumption of 25 to 30 kWh / m²a is close to the calculated demand. The building concept has many special features:

  • Use of component activation
  • passive use of solar energy
  • Exterior components with very high thermal insulation
  • Two-shell, non-load-bearing inner wall made of unfired earthen bricks, the large thermal storage mass of which has a positive effect on the temperature conditions in the rooms
  • Ventilation system with heat recovery
  • Summer cooling through night ventilation and thermoactive ceilings in heat exchange with the base plate. A chiller is not installed

When the association was dissolved, the institute building was taken over by the University of Kassel.
