In addition to today's St. Peter's Square , at least since 1339 was a municipal maintenance depot in which siege equipment and weapons were manufactured and stored. An inventory from 1414 mentions 324 crossbows , 6000 projectiles for crossbows, 17 larger firearms and 68 rifles .

A new armory, which also served as a granary and work yard, was built on the same site from 1438 to 1440.

History of the new armory

In 2019 it was decided that the armory should serve as the second location of the Basel rescue service from 2023; The reasons for this were the quicker and more reliable accessibility of the locations. Without a second location, the requirement of the Inter-Association for Rescue Services , according to which the rescuers may arrive later than 15 minutes after the emergency call in a maximum of 10 percent of the emergency, can no longer be complied with from 2025. The second location also facilitates the future renovation of the building on Hebelstrasse.
