In 1286 the place (Blazze) was recognized as part of the urban area and served as a kind of public park and sports field. After the Basel earthquake in 1356, St. Peter's Square served as a marketplace for a while and thus became a public square very early on. In addition to fun activities, there were also military exercises and weapons inspections, as well as games and competitions for which the population gathered in large numbers. Over time, various buildings were built around this square, such as the Stachelschützenhaus with a ground-level crossbow shooting hall in the 14th century, as well as the grain and armory . In addition, the square was continuously developed and in 1779 received a fountain on the northeast corner.
