The Basel Autumn Fair , in Basle German simply d Mäss, is a fair that takes place every autumn in the city of Basel .

history

The tradition of this fair goes back to the Middle Ages . Following the Council of Basel , Emperor Friedrich III. on July 11, 1471 at the Reichstag in Regensburg of the city of Basel - represented by the mayor Johannes von Bärenfels who traveled specially - the privilege of holding two large trade fairs every year , one before Pentecost and one in the autumn before Martin's Day . While the spring fair only lasted for a short time, the autumn fair has remained uninterrupted until today. This makes it the oldest fair in Switzerland and also the largest between Stuttgart and Milan .

Fair

Originally, the mass always began 14 days before martini on Sabine Day (October 27), the day before the name festival of the apostles Simon and Jude Thaddäus . It was the town clerk on the grain market proclaimed before the town hall and then by two Council bells in the tower of the church of St. Martin hung on and ausgeläutet again.

Since 1926, the autumn fair has always started on the Saturday before October 30th. It is rung in at twelve o'clock sharp with the measuring bell in the Martinsturm. For this purpose, the respective bell ringer (formerly this was usually the Sigrist , now voluntary civilians) is given a pair of gloves as a bell ringer's reward. This custom was introduced in the 20th century by the voluntary Basel monument preservation organization based on the earlier widespread payment for services in kind. As proof that the handover has taken place, the bell ringer shows the people on the church square with the left glove from the tower window of the Martinskirche. He receives the right glove only after the mass has ended.

Mässmoggen

At the opening, free rides on the amusement rides - mostly shortened in time - are offered until 12:15 (in previous years even at 11 a.m., all rides were then free until 12 p.m.). This means that the festival begins on six squares in the city at the same time, which is called Chilbi in other parts of Switzerland , but this expression is not at home in Basel. At the same time the market stalls open on St. Peter's Square and the Fair in the halls of Messe Basel begins. In the following 16 days, almost a million people populate the Messe , Barfüsser , Münster and Petersplatz , the Rosentalanlage and the barracks area. In addition to the numerous rides, there are a large number of stalls with culinary offers and sweets. The grocer's market (Häfelimärt) on the festively decorated St. Peter's Square lasts two days longer.

During this festival, special Basel sweets, the Mässmoggen , are sold .
