history

Bremen guns from the 17th century

From 1460 at the latest, there were several arsenals in Bremen , in which cannons and other weapons were housed. In 1597 the following arsenals are mentioned:

  • "On the high wall",
  • "On the Schwanengatt",
  • "On the herd gate",
  • "On the Easter gate",
  • the new armory "on the Ostertor"
  • "In the Wolfe under the Easter Gate",
  • "On the bride ",
  • the "black (Catherine) monastery"
  • the "Arkalie" and that
  • "New granary in front of the mobile phone"

The buildings were fortress towers or sheds, and the Katharinenkloster was a church. The church of the former Dominican or preacher monks' monastery was located between Sögestraße and the bowl basket and was converted into an armory in 1597. The superintendent had the Schottherren (riflemen) from the council and two citizens, who were also the morning speakers of the carpenters.

The weapons stocks were sold from 1802, after the wars of liberation the armory was given up, in 1826 the building was sold to merchants and warehouse floors were confiscated. In 1888 most of the former church was demolished, only the eastern part at the bowl basket remained as a packing house; it was canceled in 1960/61.
