Zhang Guolao

Zhang Guolao ( Chinese  張 果 老 ), also Zhang Guo Lao ( Chang Kuo Kau ), is a famous Daoist immortal in Chinese mythology . He belongs to the group of the Eight Immortals .

According to legend, Zhang Guolao is said to have been a farmer on his way to the market when he smelled a pleasantly fragrant meal in a temple on the roadside. He went in and ate the herb meal with his donkey. Then an alchemist came in and insulted him terribly for having eaten everything on his own. Chang jumped upside down on the donkey and rode away quickly. Since it was an enchanted meal, he and his donkey became immortal.

Zhang Guolao is often depicted with a mule and a bamboo drum with iron rods. He is the patron saint of the old people and he brings blessings to children.
