Zhao Mengfu (趙孟頫 / 赵孟頫, * 1254 ; † 1322 ) was a Chinese painter of the Song and Yuan dynasties , who distinguished himself through his skills in Chinese painting , Chinese calligraphy , poetry and music . But he is also best known for his horse painting. Kublai Khan personally recruited him for high civil service in 1286. At the time of Emperor Buyantu Khan he was one of the most influential personalities at court. Zhao was the eleventh generation of Emperor Taizu's descendants, a born Song prince. He ended his political career as President of the Imperial Hanlin Academy .
