The brick perches (Latilinae; Syn .: Branchiosteginae) are a group of perch-related marine fish, which are assigned as a subfamily to the torpedo perches (Malacanthidae). They occur in the Indo-Pacific and in the western Atlantic .

features

They are higher back than the Malacanthinae (the actual torpedo perch), their head profile is round, sometimes also angular. Some species have a crest of bones in front of the dorsal fin. The thorn on the gill cover is not very large. The dorsal fin is supported by six to ten spines and 14 to 27 soft rays, the anal fin has one or two spines and 11 to 26 soft rays.

Way of life

The tile perch usually live at greater depths than the Malacanthinae, usually between 50 and 600 meters. In contrast to these, they do not build piles of rubble or residential tubes as shelters.
