Cathrinesminde Brickwork Museum
The Brickworks Museum Cathrinesminde (Danish Cathrinesminde Teglvæerksmuseum ) is located on the Danish side of the Flensburg Fjord southwest of the town of Broager . The history of the brickworks and its products from 1732 to 1968 are presented in the former production facility. The Teglværksstien (Brickworks Path) begins at the museum , an industrial-historical hiking trail to the relics of what were once eight brickworks on Illerstrand .
history
Abundant deposits of stone-free basin clays in the former dead ponds gave rise to a large number of brickworks on the Flensburg Fjord and on its northern branch Nybøl Nor . Almost 70 brick factories produced yellow and red clinker brick over a period of 300 years and shipped them to the Caribbean . It was the largest concentration of brickworks in all of Northern Europe .
The Cathrinesminde brickworks was in operation between 1732 and 1968, the first 148 years as a farm brickwork and since 1837 owned by the Hollesen family. In 1892, Andreas Hollesen built the 481 m² ring kiln , which replaced the chamber kilns and, as the cornerstone of the brickworks, made it possible to survive longer than many of its competitors. The imposing building with its large chimney is still preserved.
When tunnel kilns finally became state of the art, Cathrinesminde was also shut down. A great industrial era came to an end here when the ring furnace went out in 1968.
museum
After 1980, interest grew to fill this part of cultural history with life. As early as 1982, an open-air theater was performed with the brickworks as a backdrop . Finally, from 1986 onwards, the dilapidated buildings of the old brickworks were resurrected as part of a comprehensive employment project: The opening of the Cathrinesminde Brickwork Museum on August 19, 1993 was the result of a great mutual commitment.
The main exhibition in the former form hall provides information on the history of bricks from the Middle Ages to the present day with models, tools and machines, as well as products from brick production from different eras. The chambers of the ring furnace and the room above for the firing and control of the firing temperature are accessible.
There are reconstructions of a kneading mill, a painting table and a kiln on the museum grounds. Schoolchildren are introduced to pre-industrial brick production in the historical workshop. A building with workers' apartments is furnished with interiors that reflect the everyday life of brickworkers in the 1890s, 1930s and 1960s.
The museum is closed in the winter months - just like the brickworks used to be - because the clay was no longer malleable in the cold.
Awards
In 2007 the brickworks was recognized as one of 25 national industrial monuments in Denmark.
