features

It reaches a length of about 4 cm and is very similar to the red of Rio ( H. flammeus ) and the yellow of Rio ( H. bifasciatus ), species to which it is closely related. The fish is colored fawn to olive-brown and has two characteristic shoulder spots, the first is only hinted at, the second black. There is a shiny gold spot between the two. The fins are vermilion, the outer parts of the dorsal, anal and pelvic fins white. The coloring of the males is a little more intense. When excited, the rear body of the animals turns more brick-red, which gave the fish its German name.
