The yellow of Rio ( Hyphessobrycon bifasciatus ), also known as the yellow tetras and brass tetra , is a freshwater fish found in coastal rivers of southern Brazil from Espírito Santo to Rio Grande do Sul and in the upper Río Paraná .

features

It reaches a length of about 5 cm (females stay smaller) and is very similar to the red of Rio ( H. flammeus ). The body is stocky, high back and flattened on the sides. The basic color is silvery, yellowish or shiny greenish. Behind the gill cover one can see two slightly protruding elongated spots. The side line is drawn with dark, interlocking angle paints. The fins are gray, the leading edges of the dorsal and anal fin are white. The fins of the fry are red.

The yellow of Rio is often attacked by the larvae ( metacercaria ) of certain flukes (Trematoda). The fish encapsulate the parasites with guanine excretions, which gives the fish an intense golden color and makes them interesting for aquaristics . Aquarium offspring lack this golden sheen.
