Expansion of the Ziegram around 1847

The Ziegram is a former swamp, moor, peat and bush forest area in today's Elbe-Elster district in the south of Brandenburg .

description

The Ziegram is located between the Bad Liebenwerda districts of Kröbeln , Oschätze and Kosilenzien and covers an area of around 1000 hectares.

The Kleine Röder is the only larger body of water that flows through the area. Apart from the trees and bushes that accompany the trail, the area is open and only covered by reeds in particularly moist areas. There are large deposits of peat underground, which, for example, led to a peat fire in the extremely dry summer of 1907.

The entire area is criss-crossed by numerous amelioration ditches that were used in the last century to drain the area in order to make it usable for agriculture. So at the beginning of the 20th century the regulation of the Schwarzgraben , today's Kleiner Röder, took place . In the 1920s, prisoners were used who were housed in a barracks specially built for them on the northern edge of the area. They should reclaim the huge area. Since this remained unfinished, the Reich Labor Service followed in the 1930s . Light railways carried the earth over long distances. The last major renovation work was completed in the 1970s. In retrospect, however, it was found that these measures had little success, so that the majority of the area can only be used for grazing with cows.

Settlement of the area

In the immediate vicinity of the village of Kosilenzien there is an approximately 3000 year old castle wall, which was built as a refuge or protective castle. In the oval it measures about 400 meters and is today one of the ground monuments in the Elbe-Elster district .
Archaeological finds date back to the Bronze Age . Bronze jewelry and axes, urn vessels and numerous ceramic shards have been found here.

The villages of Kosilenzien , Kröbeln and Oschätze on the edge of the Ziegrams are planned facilities from the time of the state expansion in the 12th and 13th centuries. Century. The area used to be rich in timber, and the residents had special rights to collect timber and harvest grass.

Since today's Kleine Röder still flowed wildly through the Ziegram in the past , some farmers owned boats that were moored at Kahngasse in Kosilenzien, among other places.

Natural space

The open wet meadow areas and reed-covered areas are ideal for the bird world as a breeding ground and during migration in spring and autumn as a resting and gathering place. Between 1984 and 1994 members of the Biological Working Group were able to identify 107 bird species, 80 of which are regular or isolated breeding birds. Among other things, gray herons , teal ducks , cranes , white-tailed eagles , golden hammer , red kite and marsh warbler have been observed here .
