History and architecture

This flank tower was built by the Transylvanian Saxons between 1337 and 1366 and is 21.65 meters high. It belonged to the third fastening ring. The towers of the city wall that crowned them were named after the guilds, who were entrusted with the defense, especially against the Turks . In 1492 there were twelve towers in the city, including this one.

The carpenter's tower, built flush with the circular wall on a cylindrical substructure, originally carried a defensive plate with battlements, which around 1450 was connected to the pottery tower by a half-open wooden battlement resting on an octagonal superstructure (built later, due to the necessity of the defensive section of the wall was built in the second half of the 15th century, to shorten) was replaced. The defense tower was also adapted for the use of firearms ( arquebuses ), but because of its prism shape, rectangular or polygonal, did not provide the best protection against enemy artillery. The protruding upper part is finished with consoles and machicolations. The entrance to the tower was from the battlement of the circular wall, which also ran along the city side of the building. The attached roof was shaped like an octagonal pyramid. Between the castle tower and the carpenter's tower, a large gate broke through the inner city wall, which led into the theater courtyard of the thick tower .

The tower was first restored in the 17th century, then from 1967 to 1972 and again in 2008.

Hermann, the medieval minstrel, placed in front of the carpenter's tower by the masonry of the guard corridor and near the main entrance to the Sibiu Philharmonic, with his instrument (flute), represents the development of the performing arts - poetry, music, theater - in Sibiu.
