The cinnamon-winged woodpecker ( Piculus simplex ) is a bird from the family of the woodpeckers (Picidae) found in Central America .
features
Cinnamon-winged woodpeckers reach an average body length of 18 centimeters and a weight of 51 to 55 grams. There is a slight sexual dimorphism between the sexes . In the males the top and back of the head, neck, reins and cheeks are colored a strong red, in the females this color only appears on the back of the head. In both sexes, the chest area is green and white piebald, the belly olive-brown and sparred white . The birds have greenish, slightly cinnamon-colored wings and an equally colored back plumage. The long, dark green control feathers are wedge-shaped and serve as a support when they move on tree trunks. The beak is blackish gray, the iris bluish to yellowish. Legs and feet are olive gray.
distribution and habitat
The cinnamon-winged woodpecker is found in the east of Honduras , in the south of Costa Rica and in the west of Panama . The main habitat of the species are moist forests and wooded mountain slopes at altitudes of up to 750 on the Caribbean Sea and up to 900 meters on the Pacific Ocean side. She is very faithful to the location.
Way of life
The birds, living singly or in pairs, feed on ants and beetles and their brood. The food is looked for on the ground or in rotted wood. The hatchery takes place between February and May. The typical woodpecker nest is carved as a cave in a dead tree trunk at heights between 2.5 and 5.0 meters. A nest cavity is equipped with two to four eggs. The breeding and nestling times are not yet documented.
Danger
The cinnamon-winged woodpecker is not threatened in its range and is therefore classified by the IUCN as a “ least concern ”.
