It was built from 1957 to 1958 in the style of post-war modernism and is now part of the Freisenbruch-Horst-Eiberg parish in the Essen parish of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland . On November 21, 2019, it was placed under a preservation order.

history

In 1938 there were already plans of the evangelical parish of Königssteele to build a church in the upper Horst. Due to the Second World War that began in 1939, construction was no longer carried out. Due to the immigration of workers for mining in the area of Horst and the neighboring Eiberg , but also Protestant war refugees from former German eastern areas such as Silesia , Pomerania and East Prussia , a church building became necessary again.

The church was built according to plans by the Eiberger architect Karl-Friedrich Lange, who designed it from 1953. The name given to the high-lying church is reminiscent of Mount Zion in Jerusalem , i.e. the heavenly location. The foundation stone was laid on April 14, 1957. The consecration of the church followed on November 30, 1958. The kindergarten, the youth home and the sexton's apartment were built in the same period. The tower with steel bells of the Bochumer Verein is freestanding in the manner of a campanile and was added in 1959/60, as well as a parish house and a sister house in 1960 to 1962. The entrance area is a cube in front of the building can also get into the cellar, which houses a kitchen. The lead-framed antique glass windows that form the entire background of the chancel of the single-nave church were designed in 1957 by the Düsseldorf artist Ursula Graeff-Hirsch . They show the four evangelist symbols Matthew , Mark , Luke and John as well as grape and ear of wheat in an abstract form . The chancel has a limestone floor, the parish hall has a parquet floor. In the rear part of the church there is a gallery on which the organ is also housed. At the end of the gallery, a partition can be opened, with which the church space can be divided into two. A large-format mosaic on the subject of the Good Shepherd, which was restored in 1993, is attached to the outer wall south of the church entrance.

In 1968 the parish of Königssteele was dissolved and the parish of Horst-Eiberg was founded.

organ

Originally there was an eclectic organ from the Krien company on the organ loft in the rear part of the church. In 1980 it was replaced by an organ from Emil Hammer Orgelbau .
