Cistercian Abbey of Jüterbog

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian Abbey of Jüterbog was a monastery of the Cistercians in Jüterbog in Brandenburg from 1282 to 1557 .

location

The monastery was located in the Dammvorstadt west of the medieval town of Jüterbog near the Church of Our Lady . Aside from the Church of Our Lady, the northern enclosure wing (as part of the administration building) is left of structural remains.

history

The monastery was founded in 1282 with 13 nuns from the Lorenz monastery in Magdeburg , with the intercession of the archbishop and some of his ministerials to the city. It was furnished with some real estate. The archbishops of Magdeburg as rulers, the bishops of Brandenburg as clergymen and citizens of Jüterbog and the surrounding area gave the monastery numerous foundations.

Since the early 16th century the economic situation and the reputation in the city deteriorated, then intensified after 1517. The convent remained Catholic until around 1540 and then probably continued to exist in the Protestant faith. In 1563 three sisters still lived there, in 1569 the last one had died. Thereafter, the facility and the associated property were transferred to the ore monastery of Magdeburg.

Structures

The monastery did not belong to any religious association. It was alternately referred to as a Cistercian or Benedictine monastery, but no connections to any of these orders are recognizable. The monastery was sometimes referred to as the Holy Cross Monastery , then the Laurentius Monastery and in the 16th century as the Convent of Our Lady .

The monastery was headed by an abbess , there was also a prior and at times a subprioress . The size of the convent is unknown after it was founded. The nuns came from noble and middle-class families in the city and the surrounding area.

economy

The monastery owned land in numerous villages in the area, as well as larger areas of forest and meadow. A large part of the income resulted from their use and leasing. There were also foundations from citizens and bishops. The monastery had the right of patronage over the town churches and some village churches in the area.
