Boris Rothemund

Boris Rothemund , born as Herbert Josef Rothemund (* 1930 - September 19, 2015 at Autenried Castle in Bavaria ) was a German Orthodox clergyman and initially Bishop of the Orthodox Church of Germany , later Archbishop of the Greek Orthodox Orthodox Metropolis of Aquileia and Western Europe , neither of the other Orthodox churches recognized as canonically recognized. He was the author of several books on icon art .

Life

Herbert J. Rothemund grew up in a Catholic family. He briefly attended a Catholic seminary and then turned to the Orthodox Church. He studied Orthodox theology and art and has published numerous publications on icon art since 1954.

In 1959 he was ordained bishop of the Orthodox Church of Germany . With his support, Autenried Castle in Bavaria was acquired for the community and an icon museum was created jointly with the Slavic Institute Munich e. V. founded. In the following decades the collection was expanded considerably. Bishop Boris Rothemund was committed to the castle, the Orthodox community and the icon collection throughout his life.

After 1984 he became Archbishop of the Diocese of Munich, the Orthodox Metropolis of Aquileia and Western Europe.
