Cistercian abbey L'Eule

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian abbey L'Eule (also: L'Eula or Leula ) was a monastery of the Cistercian women from 1174 to 1791 , first in Le Soler , from 1365 in Perpignan , a town in the Pyrénées-Orientales department in France .

history

Before 1174, the Cistercian Abbey of Fontfroide founded the women's monastery, L'Eule, west of Perpignan (after Saint Eulalia of Mérida, venerated in Spain and Perpignan ) to receive members of the monks' families . In 1365 the monastery moved to the city of Perpignan for greater security and existed there until it was dissolved by the French Revolution in 1791. In L'Eule (Le Soler), which was temporarily inhabited by the Santes Creus monastery in the 16th century , still stands on the grounds of the Mas de l'Eula estate, the church of Sainte-Marie de l'Eula . Furthermore, the field names Terrenys (= terrain) de l'Eula , Font (= source) de l'Eula and Camp (= field) de l'Eula remind of the former monastery. There are no remains in Perpignan.
