The Cistercian abbey La Bourdillière was 1662-1778 a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Genillé , Indre-et-Loire , Archdiocese of Tours in France.

history

A wealthy member of the family de Menou , numerous sisters, daughters and nieces, had founded in 1662 by Archbishop Victor Le Bouthillier of Tours for his family northeast hole in Genillé on the river Indrois by buying an old mansion the nunnery La Bourdillière (the name of the Mansion, the chapel was dedicated to Notre-Dame de Pitié ). The first abbess, Claude de Menou, older sister of the founder, was a nun of the Cistercian abbey of La Virginité . The original priory was elevated to a royal Cistercian abbey in 1688. The monastery (at times with 50 nuns) had the peculiarity of being almost exclusively inhabited by one and the same family. Financial difficulties led to the official dissolution in 1770, which took effect in 1778. Remaining buildings (the church has been destroyed) have been a listed building since 1951. In the church of Sainte-Eulalie in Genillé, a plaque commemorates the former monastery.
