Cistercian Abbey of Nieuwenbosch

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian Abbey Nieuwe Bosch was 1215-1796 a monastery of Cistercian nuns , first in Lokeren , from 1247 in Heusden, finally, from 1588 in Ghent , Province of East Flanders , in Belgium .

history

The Utenhove patrician family from Ghent founded the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw ten Bosch or Nonnenbosch nunnery in Lokeren in 1204 at a place called "Oudenbosch" , which was accepted into the Cistercian order in 1215 . In 1247 the monastery was moved to Heusden and took the name Nieuwenbosch (also Nieuwen-Bosch ). After a period of prosperity, the unrest of 1578 (with the destruction of the monastery) forced the company to move to Ghent, where new buildings were built. In 1796 the monastery was closed by the French Revolution . Since 1810, part of the Ghent buildings has been managed by the School Sisters of Notre Dame de Namurinhabited whose school is called Nieuwen Bosch . In Heusden, the Bosseveerhoeve is evidence of the former abbey.
