Oosteeklo Cistercian Abbey

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian Abbey Oosteeklo was 1217-1798 a monastery of Cistercian nuns , first in Eeklo , from about 1,540 in Oosteeklo today: Assenede , and from 1585 in Ghent , Province of East Flanders , in Belgium .

history

In 1217 a nunnery was founded in Eeklo north of Ghent, which moved to Oosteeklo before 1250 and played a role in the reclamation of the heather. The proximity to Doornzele Abbey was the subject of complaints by the Abbot of Clairvaux . In 1577 the monastery was devastated by the Geusen . In 1585 the nuns went to their refuge Posteernehof at Posteernepoort in Ghent (today demolished). In 1798 the monastery was dissolved by the French Revolution . Only in Oosteeklo does the (now restored) guest house still bear witness to the former bloom.
