The Cistercian Abbey Doornzele was from 1215 to 1797, a monastery of Cistercian nuns , first in Doornzele, Evergem , from 1586 in Ghent , Province of East Flanders , in Belgium .

history

In 1215 a Cistercian convent was founded in Doornzele (today: Evergem) north of Ghent, which was destroyed by the Geusen in 1578 . The nuns moved to Ghent in 1586 (in today's "Doornzelestraat") and built new buildings. After the monastery was closed by the French Revolution in 1797, the Dames de l'Instruction Chrétienne de Gand of the Belgian branch of the Society of the Sacred Heart founded by Agathe Verhelle (1786–1838) began to resettle in 1823 Jesus (Sacré-Cœur) .
