Cistercian Abbey of Roosendael
The Cistercian Abbey Roosendael was 1221-1797 a monastery of Cistercian nuns , in Sainte-Catherine-Waver , Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels in Belgium .
history
The monastery, which was founded north of Mechelen on the river Nete in 1221 , was destroyed in the 16th century and rebuilt in the 17th century in an impressive baroque style, but closed in 1797 by the French Revolution and demolished except for a few remains. Roosendael Castle, built on the site of the Abbess's House, was destroyed in 1914. In 1958 the last owner bequeathed the complex to the archbishopric with the condition that it be used as a youth hostel. From 1995 to 2009 there was extensive restoration and subsequent use as a place for hospitality and events. The monumental gatehouse, which was built in 1778 for the 25th year of the Abbess Agnes Haeghens (1703–1788), has been preserved.
