Cistercian Abbey of Saint-Just

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian Abbey of Saint-Just was a monastery of the Cistercian women from 1349 to 1791, first in Saint-Just-de-Claix , and from 1600 in Romans-sur-Isère , Département Drôme , France.

history

Humbert II (Viennois) founded the nunnery Notre-Dame-des-Anges-en-Royans in Saint-Just-de-Claix in 1349 for his mother Beatrix of Hungary, daughter of Karl Martell (Hungary) , who entered there and died in 1354 . In 1600 the convent moved to the city of Romans-sur-Isère, where it continued to bear the name of Saint-Just . In 1791 the French Revolution led to the dissolution of the monastery. From 1804 to 1906 the monastery buildings that remained in Romans were settled by the Order of the Sisters of the Holy Sacrament of Valence , founded by Pierre Vigne (1670–1740) . They are still preserved in Rue Saint-Just and are used as a school. In Saint-Just-de-Claix, the monastery building was converted into the Notre-Dame Castle (also: des Anges ), which still exists today .
