Ten Roosen Cistercian Abbey

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian Abbey Ten Roosen (also: Ten Rozen or Ter Roosen ) was 1235-1796 a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Aalst , East Flanders Province , Belgium .

history

In 1228 a nunnery was founded in Aalst (French: Alost ), which was accepted into the Cistercian Order in 1235 and erected stately monastery buildings in the 13th century. Looting and destruction occurred in the 16th and 17th centuries, but the community survived (at last with 58 people) until it was abolished by the French Revolution . In Aalst, the street names “Oude Abdijstraat” and “Rozendreef” are reminiscent of the former abbey, of which there are no remains. There is a children's sanatorium on site, which keeps the memory of the monastery alive.
