The Cistercian Abbey Viterbo (also: Monastero della Duchessa ) since 1557, a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Viterbo , Region Lazio , Italy.

history

Gerolama Orsini , Duchess of Parma , Piacenza and Castro, founded the Cistercian monastery Visitationis Beatae Mariae Virginis (“Visitation of Mary”), known as “Monastero della Duchessa” (monastery of the Duchess) in Viterbo in 1557 . From 1566 to 1574, according to the will of the Duchess, the convent lived in Castro , the capital of her Duchy of Castro , which has now disappeared , but returned to Viterbo after her death. The most famous nun was Benedetta Frey (1836–1913), bedridden in agony for 52 years, whose beatification process has begun. In the 20th century, the monastery in Via San Pietro stood out for its perpetual adoration of the Holy of Holies . Its existence is currently at risk.

Santa Maria del Paradiso

In Viterbo there was already a Cistercian monastery in the Middle Ages, namely the Cistercian Abbey of Santa Maria del Paradiso from 1271 to 1436 , which was dissolved (apparently due to disorderly conditions). The nuns were replaced by Franciscans who are back today. Part of the building is used by the university.
