history

Foundation and early years (2008 to 2011)

Singer Rob Damiani

The four founding members Rob Damiani ( vocals ), Simon Delaney ( guitar ), Luke Rayner ( bass ) and Matt Donnely ( drums ) met at the Bedford Modern School, where they first played in various bands. They later started making music together and also played their first concert at their school. In the early days, the group performed by different names, including Club Sex and Summerfall . After the musicians graduated from school, they parted ways initially. Rob Damiani and Matt Donnely studied in Nottingham while Simon Delaney studied in Norwich . However, they made a pact that they will continue as a band when they finish their studies.

In 2008 the four musicians graduated and from then on concentrated around the band, which had no name for a long time. At first the band wanted to call themselves Don Loco . They became Don Broco after Simon Delaney broke a wrist playing soccer . In the same year released the EPs Living the Dream and Thug Workout . Don Broco played a tour supporting Enter Shikari before the band played at festivals such as Download , the Camden Crawl or the Underage Festival in the summer . In early 2011, the band released the EP Big Fat Smile , which was produced by Matt O'Grady. This was followed by a tour in the opening act for We Are the Ocean and Deaf Havana and a headlining tour of their own with Burn the Fleet . In summer 2011 Don Broco played at festivals such as Download, the Sonisphere Festival and the Slam Dunk Festival . The highlights were appearances at the Reading and Leeds Festivals .

Priorities and Automatic (2011 to 2015)

Guitarist Simon Delaney

Together with producer Dan Lancaster, who previously worked with bands like Blink-182 and Good Charlotte , Don Broco worked on their debut album. In March 2012, Don Broco was signed by Search and Destroy Records , a sub-label of Sony Music Entertainment . After a tour in the opening act of Four Year Strong bassist Luke Rayner left the band and was replaced by Tom Doyle. This was followed by further tours in the opening act for You Me at Six and The Used as well as festival appearances at the Slam Dunk , Hit the Deck and The Great Escape festivals . The debut album Priorities was released on August 13, 2012 and reached number 25 on the British album charts. Further tours followed in the opening act of Lower Than Atlantis and the first European tour in the opening act of the Young Guns . With the Kerrang! Awards In 2012 , Don Broco was nominated for Best British Newcomer , but the award went to While She Sleeps .

In 2013, Don Broco played their first headlining tour of the UK , with the band supported first by Mallory Knox and then by Pure Love , before Don Broco played the main stage at the Reading and Leeds Festivals that summer. In August 2013, the band released their single You Wanna Know , which entered the UK singles chart at number 39. Priorities became at the Kerrang! Awards 2013 nominated for Best Album , but the award went to Biffy Clyro for her album Opposites . The band spent 2014 songwriting their second studio album and only toured with You Me at Six. Together with producer Jason Perry, who was previously the vocalist for Band A , Don Broco recorded their second studio album Automatic , which was released on August 7, 2015 via Epic Records . Before that, Don Broco headlined the Kerrang Tour in spring 2015 , which also supported We Are the In Crowd , Bury Tomorrow , Beartooth and the Young Guns.

Technology (since 2016)

Bass player Tom Doyle

In the spring of 2016 Don Broco toured Europe twice; initially in the supporting act for Bring Me the Horizon and then as supporting act for 5 Seconds of Summer . In summer 2016 the founder of SharpTone Records Shawn Keith became aware of the band through the computer game Guitar Hero and learned through the band management that Don Broco was looking for a license partner for North America . Then SharpTone signed the band and released Automatic in November 2016. In April 2017, Don Broco played for the first time in North America in the opening act for the band State Champs . The band then recorded their third studio album Technology together with producer Dan Lancaster and played at festivals such as Pinkpop , Slam Dunk, and Rock am Ring and Rock im Park in Germany .

In October 2017, Don Broco played as opening act for One Ok Rock for the first time in Japan , before Don Broco played their biggest single concert to date on November 11, 2017 when they performed in front of 10,400 spectators at London's Alexandra Palace . Also in November 2017, allegations were made against the singer Rob Damiani of sexual misconduct. However, these allegations turned out to be false and were publicly withdrawn. Technology was released on February 2, 2018 and reached number five on the UK album charts. With the Kerrang! Awards 2019, Don Broco was nominated in the category Best British Live Band . However, the award went to the band Architects . In the spring of 2019, Don Broco toured North America with Dance Gavin Dance supporting Mike Shinoda , before a headlining tour of North America was announced in the fall of 2019.

style

Drummer Matt Donnelly

Don Broco's music blends many different styles of music and is usually referred to as alternative rock , pop rock, or post-hardcore . Scott Kerr of the online magazine Allmusic described Don Broco as an alternative rock band in the spirit of the Young Guns or Funeral for a Friend . Singer Rob Damiani described the band's music as " rock influenced by pop , filtered through a kaleidoscope of funk , metal and electronic ".

“We're just not afraid to take risks, either musically or visually. For us it is no problem to look and sound like a different band with each new album. [...] The motto is: Everything is allowed. The crazier the better. "

- Rob Damiani

In the early days, according to Simon Delaney, the band sounded like " mixed up different songs by the Lost Prophets or Incubus ". The second album Automatic showed influences from funk, dance and new wave . With their third album, Technology , the band wanted to record a "no-nonsense rock album" that was "influenced by some of the post-hardcore bands the band members grew up with."

In April 2019, the US online magazine Loudwire named Don Broco on a list of the 16 bands that currently define rock music in the UK.
