Cistercian convent of Montarlot

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian monastery of Montarlot was a monastery of the Cistercian women in Montarlot-lès-Rioz , a municipality in the Haute-Saône department in France , from around 1174 to 1393 .

history

In the early days of the Cistercian Order , when male monasteries were founded in the 12th century, women’s monasteries were often founded next door for female family members who also felt called to be. This explains the founding of the Montarlot nunnery between the Bellevaux monastery and the La Charité monastery (Franche-Comté) before 1174 (from Latin mostelletum = little monastery, intermediate stage: mostello ). Today's Montarlot-lès-Rioz (formerly also: Montarlot-les-Boult ) developed from the monastery property. In 1393 the monastery lost its independence when it joined Bellevaux. To the north of the village, on the boundary of the neighboring community of Fondremand , the hamlet name L'Abbayotte (= abbey) reminds of the monastery. There are no residues.
