life and work

Franz Gerhard Pruneder was born as the son of Maria Susanne Pruneder and Oswald Pruneder (table decker, collegiate musician and “ancestor of three generations of musicians and servants” of the Heiligenkreuz Abbey ). Franz Gerhard was one of three sons. His brothers Adam and Ferdinand Pruneder also acted as collegiate musicians and valet of the 54th abbot of Heiligenkreuz, Gerhard Weixelberger . Following the family tradition, Franz Gerhard began his training as a choirboy in Heiligenkreuz. He then remained in the monastery as a musician and learned "the organ and the art of movement" from the Prefect of the Boys' Choir, Johann Baptist Peyer. In 1715 Pruneder became the organist of the monastery and at the age of 20 he succeeded Peyer as prefect of the choirboys. From his marriage to Rosa Stigler from Siegenfeld he had two sons: Franz de Paula (* 1720 † 1786, monastery organist after the death of his father) and Gerhard Franz Pruneder (* 1724 † 1750, bassist).

Compositions

Pruneder's compositions were not limited to the spiritual context, but also included secular music. Some of this has not survived, but the following works can be found in monastic archives:

The Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna also has several other works by Pruneder.
