La Grâce-Dieu Monastery (Franche-Comté)

The monastery La Charité (Caritas) in the former region of Franche-Comté (the free county) is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Neuvelle-lès-la-Charité in the Haute-Saône department , Franche-Comté region, in France , about 23 km southwest the city of Vesoul , in the valley of the Romaine . It should not be confused with the La Charité monastery (Burgundy) near Lézinnes in the Yonne department , which was founded in 1432 and is a daughter of Clairvaux monastery .

history

The monastery was settled in 1133 by twelve monks from the Bellevaux monastery and thus belonged to the filiation of the Morimond primary abbey . It received equipment from the Lords of Traves, including salt pans in Lons-le-Saunier . At the end of the 12th century monastic discipline loosened and the General Chapter of the Cistercian Order felt compelled to intervene. In 1477 there was a siege by the troops of Louis XI . In 1569 the monastery was damaged. In 1633 only four monks lived in it. In 1791 the monks fled. The monastery was subsequently burned down and the abbey buildings were demolished. In 1840 a castle was built on the site of the abbot's house. Part of the complex was classified as a monument historique in 1996 .

Buildings and plant

From the church there is a yoke that has been converted into a chapel with some abbot's grave stones from the 17th and 18th centuries. Various fixtures and fittings in the church can be found in Dijon and Besançon . There is also the monastery settlement from 1560 (rue Battant 18).
