Cistercian convent Valldemaria

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian convent Valldemaria was 1146-1550 a monastery of Cistercian nuns in Maçanet de la Selva , Girona in Catalonia .

history

The local nobility donated the nunnery Santa Maria de Valldemaria ("Mariental") in 1146, which was settled by the Nonenque monastery and which is possibly the oldest Cistercian monastery in Spain (before Tulebras ). In 1169 it founded the Cadins Abbey , but always remained a priory itself . In 1550, the convent was incorporated into the Benedictine monastery of Sant Daniel de Girona , which sold the monastery buildings in Maçanet de la Selva in 1603. The monastery church from the 12th century, which was renovated in 2008 and made accessible again, remains today.
