Maria Biljan-Bilger Exhibition Hall Sommerein
The Maria Biljan-Bilger exhibition hall Sommerein is located in the market town of Sommerein in the Bruck an der Leitha district in Lower Austria . The art gallery was created by the sculptor Maria Biljan-Bilger (1912–1997) with the architect Friedrich Kurrent .
history
In 1962, Maria Biljan-Bilger and Friedrich Kurrent bought a former chapel in Sommerein that had been converted into a residential building. In exchange for the design of a glass window in the chapel of the dead in the market town, Maria Biljan-Bilger received additional building land for an adjacent quarry for the construction of an exhibition hall. At first it was more about rescuing the artist's sculptures and sculptures that had been taken out of use, such as plant troughs at the Hietzing shopping center or sculptures in the Floridsdorf children's outdoor pool. In 1997, the year Maria Biljan-Bilger died, only the stone walls of the shell of the hall stood. The construction was completed in 2004.
architecture
The art gallery has the floor plan of an irregular trapezoid. The roof was curved irregularly with prefabricated beams from Wienerberger . The sine-wave-shaped roof, created with a specially developed arching technique, is accessible. The surface of the terrain inside the building was not evened out and can be felt during the inspection. The hall is illuminated by window openings rounded at the top through the roof, which are filled in with vertical, rusty steel slats.
